26. 衣食: 人情終歲不制則寒一日不再食則飢故聖人乃制衣食以厚生民

Clothing and Food: As for human conditions, if toward the year's end people do not make clothes, then they are cold. If in a day they do not eat again, then they are starving. Therefore sages then made clothes and food to enrich living people.


27. 士: 士之爲業讀書修身整其衣冠謹其言行凡爲仕進者自士而始

Scholars: What a scholar takes as his work is to read books, cultivate himself, properly order your clothing and cap, be careful with language and conduct. On the whole, those who proceed to office begin from being scholars.


28. 孝弟: 孝悌之道根於天性不孝不悌近於禽獸也事親以誠事長以敬是爲孝悌也

Filiality and Fraternity: The way of filiality and fraternity is based on the Heavenly nature. Those who are unfilial and unfraternal are close to birds and beasts. Serving parents with sincerity and serving elders with respect are to become filiality and fraternity.


29. 四方: 天地之間有四方前爲南後爲北左爲東右爲西

Four Directions: Between heaven and earth there are four directions. Front becomes south. Back becomes north. Left becomes east. Right becomes west.


30. 草: 雜生山野爲地之毛春夏生長秋冬則黃枯

Grass: They randomly grow in the mountains and fields and become hairs of the earth. In spring and summer they grow. In autumn and winter they turn yellow and wither.

1) The Yellow Emperor (Huangdi Xuan Yuan 黃帝 軒轅) and Suiren shi 燧人氏: The yellow emperor is believed to teach ancient people how to make clothings. Suiren shi is believed to make fire and teach people to cook food.
