1. 子曰:「學而時習之,不亦說乎?有朋自遠方來,不亦樂乎?人不知而不慍,不亦君子乎?」

2. 有子曰:「其為人也孝弟,而好犯上者,鮮矣;不好犯上,而好作亂者,未之有也。君子務本,本立而道生。孝弟也者,其為仁之本與!」

3. 子曰:「弟子入則孝,出則弟,謹而信,汎愛眾,而親仁。行有餘力,則以學文。」

4. 子禽問於子貢曰:「夫子至於是邦也,必聞其政,求之與?抑與之與?」子貢曰:「夫子溫、良、恭、儉、讓以得之。夫子之求之也,其諸異乎人之求之與?」

5. 子曰:「不患人之不己知,患不知人也。」

孟子見梁惠王。王曰:「叟不遠千里而來,亦將有以利吾國乎?」

孟子對曰:「王何必曰利?亦有仁義而已矣。王曰『何以利吾國』?大夫曰『何以利吾家』?

士庶人曰『何以利吾身』?上下交征利而國危矣。萬乘之國弒其君者,必千乘之家;千乘之國弒其君者,必百乘之家。

萬取千焉,千取百焉,不為不多矣。苟為後義而先利,不奪不饜。未有仁而遺其親者也,未有義而後其君者也。

王亦曰仁義而已矣,何必曰利?」

Mencius met King Hui of Wei. The king said: "You the elder visited here for more than thousand miles. What are the things by which you will be benefiting my state?"

孟子見梁惠王。王曰:「叟不遠千里而來,亦將有以利吾國乎?」 Mencius had an audience with King Hui of Liang. The king said, "old man, here you came, not taking a thousand li too far. Indeed, will this be something that will be beneficial to my state? 孟子對曰:「王何必曰利?亦有仁義而已矣。王曰『何以利吾國』?大夫曰『何以利吾家』? Mencius answered, "Of all things, how could your Majesty speak of benefit? Indeed, benevolence and righteousness is all that matters.

士庶人曰『何以利吾身』?上下交征利而國危矣。萬乘之國弒其君者,必千乘之家;千乘之國弒其君者,必百乘之家。 As to the state of one thousand chariots, the one who kills the sovereign must be of the household of one-hundred chariots.

萬取千焉,千取百焉,不為不多矣。苟為後義而先利,不奪不饜。未有仁而遺其親者也,未而後其君者也。 Taking one thousand (chariots) from ten thousands or taking one hundred from one thousand may not be uncommon. In fact,

王亦曰仁義而已矣,何必曰利?」
