Madam Seo is from Poong-gi. She is the daughter of military officer [Seo] Sadal. She married Do Unbong who was from the same town, but merely counting a year, the husband died. Devastated with grief beyond normative measure, every day she went to the bamboo forest behind the house, grabbed onto bamboo and wept. Suddenly one day three stacks of white bamboo sprouted. In three years, it became seven to eight stacks. In 1438, King Sejong ordered that a painting of the white bamboo be presented, taxes for the family waived and a memorial arch be erected. [Then he bestowed] a poem of royal composition: Holding on bamboo she wailed and shed tears, one night the bamboos of white color sprang. Chastity lofty and steadfast awed the world, in the nine-gated palace the painting was seen. In the ancient times the sorrows never ceded, year after year were seen red dots on bamboo. The world shall know when it comes to pure chastity, There is no distinguishing the past and present. A couple white sprouts newly sprang up. |
