Yu Sŏkchin was a clerk in Kosan County.<ref>Of Wanju Prefecture (完州郡), North Chŏlla Province</ref> His father, Ch'ŏnŭl, had a horrible disease. Every day, he would seize; when he did, he would faint. People could not bear to watch [his suffering]. Day and night, Sŏkchin tended to his father by his side without rest, crying out and weeping toward the heavens. Broadly, he sought out treatment and medicine; [one day, he came across] a person who said that if he took the bones of a living person, mixed it with blood, and drank it, he could be cured. Sŏkchin immediately cut off the fourth finger on his left hand, and proceeded in accordance to the person's words. His father's illness immediately healed.<br />

【詩】<br />
The father suffered deeply from a chronic illness that did not heal for a long time. The son, sorrowful in his heart, cried out to the blue heavens.<br />
Who knew of the pill of the mysterious elixir? [Sŏkchin] finely ground the fourth finger on his left hand.<br />
For hundreds of years, the heavenly moral relationship of father and son has been the same. How, in accordance with the kingly transformation into virtuosity, could this have ups and downs?<br />
Every time people see the picture [of Sŏkchin's story], they pay respect toward its high integrity. The fame of his name was widely and deeply spread for eternity without end.
(Stella) Regarding 相對流淚 - could we take 相對 and 流淚 as two verb phrases with different subjects? As in, the first VP could apply to both the horse and rock (they are facing each other), but the second VP could perhaps apply only to the horse (the horse shed tears)
The fifth night<ref>Nighttime was divided into five two-hour intervals from 7 pm to 5 am: ''kabya'', ''ŭlya'', ''pyŏngya'', ''chŏngya'', and ''muya''. ''Oya'' (五夜) refers to ''muya'', or the time from 3 am to 5 am. It can be taken to mean something along the lines of 'deep in the night', but I have translated it in a more literal sense in order to retain the contrast of ''o'' (五) and ''yuk'' (六).</ref> before the lamp is like daytime
Mountain is deep, after there is a temple
Outside the mountain there is a mountain, does not exhaust
Outside roads there are roads, they are perpetual

*Discussion Questions:
If we take away from the second couplet that there are always mountains and roads, can we compare it to the first couplet that states that we are only young until we are not? This seems to be commenting on our own mortality and the shortness of our own lives especially when compared to the infinite and perpetual mountains and roads.

How can we better translate this so it flows better?
The 42nd king [of Silla], King Hŭngdŏk the Great, ascended to the throne in the second year of the Baoli<ref>Emperor Jingzong of Tang China</ref> reign, the ''pyŏngo'' year. Shortly thereafter, a person serving as an envoy to the Tang brought a pair of parrots and returned [to Silla]. Not long after, the female parrot died. The lone male parrot was sad and cried without end. The king had someone hang a mirror before [the parrot]. The bird, seeing his reflection in the mirror, figured that it had gotten [back] its mate and then pecked the mirror. Realizing that it was his reflection, it then was saddened, cried, and died. It is said that the king composed a poem [about this incident]; [its contents are] unknown. <br />
As suggested in class discussion, it may be a play on the interrogative pronoun '安' and its numerous meanings. According to this particular interpretation, Zhuangzi takes Huizi's question about ''how'' with a reply about ''where'', because the interrogative pronoun '安' can mean both (''how'' and ''where''). It could also be a reflection of Zhuangzi's view of intersubjective knowledge. In that case, Zhuangzi is noting that when Huizi asked the question "How do you know the pleasure of fish," he was himself already aware of Zhuangzi's feeling that he (Zhuangzi) knew the pleasure of fish, and came to this awareness without entering Zhuangzi's mind or becoming Zhuangzi himself. In the same way, Zhuangzi can claim to "know" the pleasure of fish without entering the fish's minds or becoming a fish himself. Rather, it is simply by being on the bridge and through some sort of capacity for empathy that Zhuangzi can know that pleasure.</ref><br />
Zhuangzi and Huizi were taking a stroll on the bridge over the Hao River. Zhuangzi said, "Small fishes come out and float around leisurely as they please. This is the pleasure of fish." Huizi said, " You are not a fish, how do you know the pleasure of fish?" Zhuangzi said, "You are not me, how do you know that I do not know the pleasure of fish?" Huizi said, "I am not you; indeed, I do not know you. [But by the same token] you, of course, are not a fish, and [therefore] you cannot know the pleasure of fish, and that is all." Zhuangzi said, "Let us return to the beginning. Your asking [me] 'How do you know the pleasure of fish?' means that you, already knowing that I knew it, asked me. I knew it upon the Hao River."1<br />
<br />

[1] The interpretation of '我知之濠上也' is debated. Rather, it is simply by being on the bridge and through some sort of capacity for empathy that Zhuangzi can know that pleasure.
*Discussion Questions:

(YO) How should we translate 奇峰? "Strange peaks" seems a bit off. That 奇 intends to mean the kind of stunning sight that makes us go "awww," I think. Something out of the ordinary. Marvelous? Astounding? Amazing? This is when we realize many of our words may carry connotations or feels different from their etyma, and make us hesitate to use.<br />
Stars are scattered pearls of a hat string

*Discussion Questions:

How do we translate 作 in the last line? Since it is a poem does it have to be parallel to 爲? If so, maybe: "Stars make [the sight of] scattered pearls of a hat string"<br />
(YO) This is an interesting thing to notice. Both 為 and 作 have the same meaning of "make" in the registered senses, but they also often function as a copula ('is'). Perhaps it was intentional to use them in either sense, switching their meaning like in a game? By the way, shouldn't it be "scattered pearls from a ''broken'' hat string?
The sky is high; the sun and moon are bright.<br />
The earth is thick; herbs and trees are born from it.<br />
The moon rises - the sky opens its eye. <br />
The mountains are tall - the land lifts its head.

*Discussion Questions:

1. Should 天 be consistently translated as Heaven, sky or from case to case as one or the other?<br />
(YO) I think it should be okay to alternate 'sky' and 'heaven' depending on the context, perhaps 'sky' for more material sense of it. Any thought?

2. In the last line could we take a liberty to say "the mountains are ''standing tall''" to make a sentence structure parallel to the one in line three?<br />
(YO) I'd be okay with it. For the second line, by the way, would it be "herbs and trees are born ''from'' it" or ''on'' it?<br />
(Stella) I like the sound of '''from'' it' because it emphasizes the the fact that the earth, with its thickness, is the ''source'' of the plants' nourishment, rather than simply their location.

==='''Poem 3 : Ethan'''===
----
Spring comes, pear tree flowers are white.

Summer arrives, tree leaves are green.

Fall is cool, yellow chrysanthemums bloom.

Winter is cold, white snow comes.

*Discussion Questions:

1. Should we include the particle ''the'' ? What about state of being verbs and the preposition ''when'' (i.e. "when spring comes...")? What effect does not including/including these words have? Which do you think is a closer approximation to the source text? <br />
(YO) The issue of the definite article "the" is not easy. Native speakers generally have different opinions about using it. Not being a native speaker of English, I can't make a trustworthy judgment. (Can anybody jump in?) As for the conjunctive "when," you're right, the original text does not have it in the literal sense. So, you may have to ask yourself, which--adding it or not, or adding something else--would render the line better.

2. What are your thoughts on word choice in differentiating verbs––來 vs. 至 in first couplet and 涼 vs. 寒 in second couplet––particularly in terms of parallel structure of the two couplets? </br>

(YO) I'd look for a pair of words that hold similar kind of synonymy between them, so that it would convey a comparable variation.

==='''Poem 4 : Canan'''===
----
Sun and moon, mirror of 100000 years

River and mountain, 100000 ancients of folding screens

East and west are doors of sun and moon

South and north are the path of wild geese.

*Discussion Questions:

Is the Mirror 100000 years old? Or is it reflecting 100000 years?

NA: I want to say that the mirror is 100,000 years old because as we know (un-poetically) the sun and moon have been around longer than the rivers and mountains on earth so I think that could mean that this mirror is that old but there is potentially other mirrors that have existed before this one. <br />
(YO) The mirror has to be at least 10000 years old in order to reflect 10000 years, right? If so, logically speaking, translating it "mirrors reflecting 10000 years" would entail that they are 10000 years old. Also, I think this 10000 years must be human time (or even human civilization) as opposed to the universal time--to which perhaps the sun and moon belong.
(Stella) I forgot to indicate the shift in my original translation, but I think it would be best to add an adverb like 'inclusively' or 'collectively'.
