 【1858】~【1932】.호레이스 뉴턴 알렌.미국 북장로교 파송 의료선교사 및 외교관. 알렌은 1883년 10월 중국 선교사로 파송되었으나 한국 선교사를 자청하여 미국북장로회 선교본부의 임명을 받았다. 1884년 9월 20일 제물포에 도착하여 미국공사관 소속 무급의사로 활동하였다. 알렌은 12월 4일 우정국(郵政局) 개설축하를 위해 모인 자리에서 발생한 갑신정변(甲申政變)으로 크게 다친 민영익(閔泳翊)을 묄렌도르프의 집에서 서양의술로 치료하여 고종과 명성황후의 신임을 얻게 되었다. 1885년 4월 10일 미국 대리공사 포크(Gorge C. Foulk, 福久)와 민영익의 협조로 통리교섭통상사무아문(統理交涉通商事務衙門) 소속 최초의 서양식 병원인 제중원 개원하고, 초대 원장으로 부임하였다. 3년 후 주미한국공사관 서기관으로 임명되었다. 8년동안 주한미국공사를 역임하였다.
