창덕궁 후원의 건물로 주합루의 동남쪽, 부용정의 동북쪽에 있다. 춘당대에서 문무관들의 과거를 설행할 때 시험을 지휘하던 장소로 그 외에도 왕이 친림하는 행사가 이 전각에서 열리는 등 궁궐 후원에서 열리는 대규모 행사에서 조선왕조 내내 쓰임이 많았다. 영화당의 편액은 영조의 어필로, 지금까지 잘 보존되어 있다.
