조선시대 궁궐은 모두 금천과 금천교를 갖추고 있었다. 금천교의 이름은 궁궐마다 다르게 지었는데 창경궁의 옥천교(玉川橋)가 이에 해당한다. 금천을 건너는 다리가 옥천교인데 다리를 건너면 정면에 보이는 장대한 문이 명정문이다.
