찬막단은 종묘제례 때 쓰일 음식을 미리 검사하는 곳이다. 제사지낼 음식을 신실에 차리기 전에 음식의 상태를 미리 살피고 전달하는 곳으로 천막을 치고 휘장을 둘러서 제사음식의 청결을 유지하였다.
