==Definition==
조선시대 이전에 천명을 받아 조선의 영역을 통치했던 역대왕조의 시조를 모시고 제향하는 장소이다. 고조선의 단군과 기자, 고구려와 백제, 신라를 건국한 동명성왕과 온조, 박혁거세와 고려를 창건한 태조 왕건 등이다. 조선에서는 역대 국왕들에게 제사를 지내도록 8곳의 제례영역을 만들었는데, 흔히 '팔전(八殿: 숭령전, 숭렬전, 숭덕전, 숭선전, 숭인전, 숭신전, 숭혜전, 숭의전)'으로 불린다. 8개의 사당은 모두 숭(崇)자 돌림자에 왕실의 영역을 상징하는 전(殿)자를 사용하였다. 이 중에 2개가 북한에 위치하고 있다. 이들에 대한 제사는 중춘(음력 2월)과 중추(음력 8월) 상순일 중에서 길일을 택해 지냈다. 제사 장소는 각 역대왕조의 시조와 밀접한 연관이 있는 지역에 각각 세웠다.
