==Definition==
[[경복궁_건청궁 | 건청궁]] 경내의 동쪽에 자리 잡고 있다. 남쪽에 [[경복궁_함광문 | 함광문]], 북쪽에 [[경복궁_복수당 | 복수당(福綏堂)]]이 있다. 왕비가 거처하던 공간이다.

한편 이곳은 1895(고종 32)년 8월 20일, 일본인과 2훈련대에 의해 명성황후가 시해당한 곳이기도 하다. 이 때 궁내부 대신 이경직(李耕稙, 1841~1895년)도 곤녕합 기둥에서 살해당했고, 연대장 홍계훈(洪啓薰, ?~1895년)은 광화문 밖에서 살해당하였다.
