공묵재 현판

Definition

‘공묵’이란 ‘공손히 침묵한다’는 뜻으로, 『서경』의 「열명(說命)」편에서 전거를 찾을 수 있다. “왕(王)이 글을 지어 고(誥)하길, 나로써 사방(四方)을 바로잡게 하시기에 나는 덕(德)이 선인(先人)과 같지 못할까 두려워 이 때문에 말하지 않고 공손하고 침묵하여 도(道)를 생각하였는데, 꿈에 상제(上帝)께서 나에게 어진 보필을 내려 주셨으니, 그가 나의 말을 대신할 것이다.”라고 하였다. 임금의 신중하고 과묵한 품성을 나타낸다.
