Definition

‘이모(貽謨)’는 ‘선대 국왕이 자손에게 내리는 교훈’을 의미한다. ‘이(貽)’는 ‘깨쳐 주다’, ‘모(謨)’는‘임금의 교훈’이라는 뜻이다. ‘모’는 원래 ‘계책’이라는 뜻으로 ‘모(謀)’와 통용되지만 특히 ‘국가 경영을 위한 훌륭한 계책이나 말씀’이라는 뜻으로 많이 쓰이는데, 이는 『서경』의 「대우모(大禹謨)」, 「고요모(皐陶謨)」편에서 유래한 것이다. ‘이모(貽謀)’의 용례는 『시경』 「대아:문왕유성(文王有聲)」의 “후손에게 계책을 남겨 주시어[貽闕孫謨] 공경하는 아들을 편안하게 하시니 무왕(武王)이 훌륭한 군주로다.”라는 표현에서 볼 수 있다.
