중광문 현판

Definition

‘중광(重光)’은 ‘빛나는 덕을 거듭 밝힌다’는 의미이다. 『서경』 「고명(顧命)」편에 “옛날의 임금인 문왕과 무왕이 거듭 빛난 덕(德)을 베풀어, 의지하여 살 바를 정해 주고 가르침을 펴니, 백성들이 열심히 익히고 어기지 않아 은(殷)나라에 도달하여 큰 명을 모았다.”라고 하였다. 송나라 때 성리학자 채침은 이에 대해 “무왕이 문왕과 같으므로 중광(重光)이라고 이른 것이니, 순(舜) 임금이 요(堯) 임금과 같으므로 중화(重華)라고 이른 것과 같다.”라고 하였다.
