이극문 현판

Definition

‘이극(貳極)’은 ‘두번째 북극’을 뜻한다. ‘이(貳)’는 버금을, ‘극(極)’은 군주를 뜻하므로, 곧 황태자·세자를 의미한다. 별자리를 볼 때 자미단(紫微檀)안에 있는 북극성을 자극(紫極)이라 하는데, 이는 임금에 비유된다. 군주를 ‘극’이라고 한 표현은 『서경』 「홍범」 편에서도 확인할 수 있다. ‘황극’을 설명하며 “무릇 서민들이 삿되게 당파를 짓는 무리들[淫朋]이 없고 지위에 있는 사람들이 아첨함이 없는 것은 임금이 극을 세우기 때문이다.”라고 한 것이 그렇다. ‘이극’을 황태자나 세자와 연관된 건물로 표현한 유래는 오래된 것으로 보인다. 송나라 때 송민구(宋敏求)가 편찬한 『당대조령집(唐大詔令集)』(권30)에서도 확인할 수 있다. 이 책 가운데 「고종명황태자령제사계사조(高宗命皇太子領諸司啓事詔)」 편을 보면 “동대(東臺)는 이극(貳極)의 터이다.”라고 되어 있다.
