용덕문 현판

Definition

‘용덕(龍德)’은 ‘제왕의 덕’을 의미한다. 『주역』, '건'괘의 「문언전(文言傳)」에 "초구(初九)에 말하기를 '못에 잠겨 있는 용이니 쓰지 말라'는 것은 무슨 뜻인가? 공자께서 말씀하셨다. '용덕을 가지고 은둔한 자이니...'"라는 구절이 있는데, 이를 두고 『본의(本義)』에서는 "용덕은 성인의 덕인데, 아랫리에 있으므로 숨은 것이다."라고 하였다. 성인(聖人)은 임금을 의미하기도 한다. 현판의 '덕(德)' 자는 속자로 써서 '心(심)' 위에 '一(일)'자를 생략했다.
