보의당 현판

Definition

‘보의(輔宜)’는 ‘천지(天地)의 마땅함을 돕는다’는 뜻이다. 『주역』 태괘의 ‘보상천지지의(輔相天地之宜)’에서 왔다. 태괘를 설명하며 「상전」에서는,“하늘과 땅이 사귀는 것이 태[交泰]이니, 군주가 이 괘를 보고서 천지의 도(道)를 계획하여 이루고[財成] 천지의 마땅함을 돕고 살펴서[輔相] 백성을 돕는다.”라고 하였다.
