  • 1912년 조선총독부는 조사 준비비 3만 원을 계상하고 조사, 설계 등을 서서히 진행하면서 동시에 경복궁 해체 작업을 시작

-경회루와 근정전과 같은 거대한 몇 개 건물만 남기고 대부분의 건물 약 4천간을 철거하여 그중 많은 것을 민간에 불하.

  • 1915년 시정5주년 기념 조선물산공진회를 계기로 경복궁 내 건물군의 해체가 본격적으로 시작

- 총독부는 근정전, 교태전, 경회루 등 주요 건물은 모두 행사장으로 사용하고, 그 외 건물들은 많은 부분 헐어내어 그 자리에 18개의 전시관을 신축.

  • 공진회 폐회 후 조선총독부 청사 준공 착수

-조선총독부 청사는 공진회가 끝난 후, 제1호관이 있던 자리, 즉 근정전 바로 앞에 건설되기 시작.
-독일인 건축가 조르주 드 라랑드(George de Lalande, 1872~1914)가 설계한 네오르네상스풍의 화강암 석조건물 .
-이에 따라 1927년 광화문 역시 경복궁의 동북쪽으로 이축.
