숭덕문 현판

Definition

‘‘숭덕(崇德)’이란 ‘덕을 높임’, ‘덕이 있는 이를 높임’이라는 뜻을 갖는데, 여기서는 ‘덕이 있는 이를 높임’의 의미로 쓰였다. 『서경』 「미자지명(微子之命)」에서 원자의 할 일과 관련하여 다음과 같이 숭덕을 강조하는 것을 볼 수 있다. “왕(王)이 다음과 같이 말씀하였다. ‘은왕(殷王)의 원자(元子)야. 옛날을 상고하여 덕이 있는 이를 높이고 어짊을 본받는 자에게 제사를 받들게 하여 선왕(先王)을 계승해서 예물(禮物)을 닦아 왕가에 손님이 되게 하노니, 나라와 함께 아름다워 영원토록 무궁하게 하라.’”

송나라 때 성리학자 채침은 주석에서 이에 대해 “숭덕(崇德)은 선대의 성왕(聖王) 중에 덕이 있는 자를 높이고 숭상하여 제사를 받드는 것을 이른다.”고 하였다. ‘德(덕)’은 속자로 써서 ‘心(심)’ 위에 ‘一(일)’ 획이 생략되어 있다.
