[[경복궁]]의 서쪽 궁문이다. 동쪽의 [[건춘문]]과 짝을 이룬다. 오행에서 서쪽을 상징하는 계절이 가을이므로 이와 같이 이름지었다. 이 문은 주로 문무백관이 출입하던 곳으로 건춘문과 똑같은 규모였다. 현재의 문은 1975년에 철근 콘크리트 구조로 복원한 것이다.
