일제강점기 경복궁 내 향원정 북쪽 건청궁 자리에 세워진 미술관 건물. 당초 조선총독부가 시정 25주년(1935)을 기념하여 박물관, 과학관과 함께 설립이 계획되었으나 , 미술관만이 계획보다 대폭 축소된 규모로 1939년 4월에 준공되었다. 해방이후 1969년 10월 20일부터 국립현대미술관으로 사용되다가 1973년 7월 국립현대미술관이 덕수궁 석조전으로 이전한 이후에는 국립민속박물관으로 사용되었으며 1998년 철거되었다. 철거된 자리에 2007년 건청궁이 복원되었다.[1]
