==Definition==

조선시대의 국가제례에서 제사 절차를 직접 수행하고 진행하는 제관 가운데 하나로, 제향의 주재자로서 제향의 권리와 의무를 동시에 지닌 사람이다. 국가제례는 국왕이 주재하는 형식이므로 초헌관은 국왕이 된다. 국왕이 직접 제사를 지낼 수 없을 때는 국왕을 대리한 관리가 초헌관을 맡았다.
