‘일화(日華)’는 ‘해의 정화’를 뜻한다. ‘해[日]’는 음양의 이치 상 양(陽)의 성격을 띠므로, 동쪽문의 이름으로 만들었다.
중국 당나라에서는 장안(長安)의 대명궁(大明宮) 선정전 앞에 있던 두 문 가운데 하나를 일화문으로, 다른 하나를 [[월화문]]으로 지은 적이 있다.

-‘자경(慈慶)’은 ‘자친(慈親)이 복을 누린다’는 의미이다. ‘자(慈)’는 ‘자친, 곧 어머니’, ‘경(慶)’은 ‘복’을 가리킨다. 국왕의 어머니인 왕대비가 거처하는 곳이므로 이와 같이 이름 지었다.
