		+	1930년대 후반에 일본어 해독 인구가 늘어날 때까지 동아일보와 조선일보는 한글 가능 인구를 상대로 폭넓은 독자층을 확보하고 있었다. 동아일보와 조선일보가 1940년 8월 폐간되기 전까지 1920~1930년대 민간 신문의 시대가 펼쳐졌다. 민간신문은 경성일보, 매일신보와 같은 총독부 기관지와 대립적으로 쓰인 말이다. 1920년대는 대중적인 한글 신문 중 동아일보사만이 주식회사 체제였다.
