Dr. Horace G. Underwood
Fusan, Korea
Feb 27, 1891 1891
Dear Dr. Ellinwood,
I had a long letter begun & nearly finished before we left Seoul but I by mistake left it there so must begin again. As you are doubtless aware Mr. Baird & I are now here to see about a place. There was no other way than to come down & see what can be done. I had thought the best way would have been to come down purchase & at least make arrangements about the beginning of the building if after arriving this seemed necessary but the Mission voted against this & sent us down to secure site. This will delay the occupation of Fusan' for at least six months more & I think the idea of the Mission was to retain Mr. Baird one year in Seoul. I think it a good idea For Mr. Baird to get the foundations of his Korean in Seoul but I think one of us might have been sent down to build & he can come later. This was not deemed best & we only have permission to purchase site. Under these circumstances on acct of delays in getting materials, the rainy season in mid-summer & the cold in winter I doubt very much whether a beginning can be made before a year from now. We will try however & get a site (unless the one mentioned by Sam Moffettis the best) with some good buildings on it & this will facilitate matters on consultations with Dr. Allen & U.S. Minister, it was ited by them that in places where there was no treaty right to purchase there were other ways of securing the use of property, that in China a lease for 900 years had been obtained. Afterwards Dr. Allen urged going to Taigu which is the capital of this province & is only 100 miles from Fusan & stated that the Minister would back us. We will go up & see what it is like & as a mission we take it that the permission to open a station at Fusan means a southern station & that if the mission deem Taigu a more important place & we have the right to go there the Board will sanction the change. At any rate the Mission all feel that the native town of Pusan is superior for a station to Fusan the Foreign settlement. These matters we will look into while here & will inform you how things are as soon as we can ascertain them.
You will also receive by this mail Mr. Gale's application to the Board for appointment as a missionary. Mr. Moffett & I were appointed to confer with him & to inform you of the Mission's unanimous approval of his appointment.
There seem certain difficulties in the way but these can I think be overcome. He is not ordained & has not taken a Theological course. He has a very thorough knowledge of the Bible but has had no training in Systematic Theology. As a consequence he is not as certain & sure on some minor matters as we would wish but he is on all the main points an out & out Presbyterian. You will however perhaps remember that when we some years ago proposed union work with Messrs Gale & Harkness it was Mr. Gale who objected to the Westminster Shorter Chatechism as one of the standards to be adhered to. I questioned him pretty closely on these matters and he seemed to be certain & sure & professes himself in full harmony with the Church & with the Mission in all its workings.
All kinds of men are needed in a Mission & Mr. Gale is an admirable man as a worker to teach the Bible to men when they have been gathered in but is adapted to the gathering in of people from the outside. He is a general favorite among all the Koreans who know him but does little to draw others to him. As a consequence of this, in Fusan where he stayed for quite a long time there are not many Koreans that he knows but in Seoul his work among Christians & adherents in opening up to them the Scriptures has been of much help.
그렇지만 바깥에서부터 사람들을 끌어 모으는 데에는 적합_____________________.
Mr. Gale is also quick to come to conclusions without sufficient date & then to change.
I tell you these things because I think you ought to know the man well. I think he will be a valuable edition to our force if he is associated with one who will draw in from the outside. He ought to be ordained & I believe he proposes taking a course out here & being examined & ordained here. I suppose that this will be the best way. I might in this place suggest that I should not be surprised to see another marriage in the Mission if he comes in. Things all point that way and he is very attentive in that direction
