Dear Dr. Ellinwood,	엘린우드인물 박사님께,
We are as you will see back in our own place again and we hope and trust that all will go along well. We will do all in our power to make them go so. We find our work awaiting us and that there is still plenty for all he has to do.	우리는 우리가 일하던 곳으로 다시 돌아왔습니다. 박사님께서도 알고 계시리라 생각합니다. 앞으로 모든 일이 순조롭게 진행되기를 바라고, 또 그렇게 되리라 믿고 있습니다. 그렇게 될 수 있도록 우리의 모든 힘을 다 쏟아 부으려 합니다. 돌아와 보니 우리를 기다리고 있는 일들이 있는 것을 보게 됩니다. 그리고 그 사람이 맡은 일을 다 한다 해도 여전히 해야 할 일이 많습니다.
I have been very much surprised to hear that you are not going to send out any more men for the present to Korea and think almost that there must be some mistake but my information comes from Dr. Gillespie. However I have it from my brother and also from Mr. Moffett that he was not to take Mr. Gardners place and that just as soon as another man could be found for Korea he should be sent. Now a man has applied for this place, one of the Boards appointees and he writes that no more are to be sent to Korea at least for a year. It was you I believe who told my brother in the presence of Mr. Moffett that another should be sent and I should like to know what is to be done. Are we going to have any more men or not. There is work enough right here in Seoul to-day for a host more men than we have and yet none are coming. There are other ports untouched and no one to go into them. If the difficulty is about passports there are 450 square miles around each port and 900 around Seoul which can be reached without a passport and these are untouched. I cannot see why the Church at home does not realize that we have almost jumped into a place at this early stage in our mission history that it has taken years in other fields to reach and as a consequence we need reinforcements at a quicker rate than they did. We are here a mere__________with the people ready to hear and yet without means. We grant the latter part but if the Board says that we have our proportion they are mistaken and figures will not hold them out. We have a very small proportion and we have not even the same ratio that China has and when we look at Japan they have in proportion seven times as many missionaries as we have without counting in either of these countries the host of native helpers well trained and able to do the full work of foreigner and the vast literature that they already have.	우리가 이러한 주장을 전면적으로 부인하는 것은 아닙니다만, ‘본부에서 우리에게 적정 인원이 배정되어 있다고 한다’면 그 말은 잘못된 것입니다. 수치를 살펴보아도 그런 말은 옳지 않다는 사실이 드러납니다. 우리에게는 매우 적은 인원이 배정되어 있으며, 중국과 동일한 비율조차 적용되지 않았습니다. 일본의 경우만 해도 우리에 비해 일곱 배나 더 많은 비율의 선교사들이 있습니다. 중국과 일본 같은 곳에는 잘 훈련된 현지인 조사(助事)들이 많이 있어서 그들이 외국인 선교사의 사역을 다 감당해 낼 수 있다는 점과 이미 문서 자료가 방대하게 갖추어져 있다는 점등은 계산에 넣지 않더라도 말입니다.
Why is it that for so long Fusan, Gensan and now Ping Yang are left unsettled. The first two have been open for so long and now when there is such a good opportunity of opening up Ping Yang why does the church hold back. Then too there is the Northern province which is so ripe, where the seed sown by the converts of Ross in the North has sprung up and but wants the reaping. One cannot live it may be said in that part of Korea but he has a perfect right to live across the Yalu river and hence by means	부산과 원산을 그렇게 오랫동안, 그리고 이제는 평양을 내 버려 두어야 하는 이유가 무엇입니까? 부산과 원산은 오랫동안 개방되어 있었고 이제 평양으로 가는 길을 열 수 있는 호기(好機)가 있는데 왜 교회는 망설이고 있는 겁니까? 북쪽 지역에도 복음의 열매가 무르익어 있습니다. 이곳에서는 로스를 통해 그리스도인들이 된 사람들이 뿌린 복음의 씨앗이 자라나 있는데 그 열매를 거둘 사람들이 없습니다. 한국 내의 그 쪽 지역에는 거주할 수 없다고 말할지 모르지만 압록강 건너편에 사는 데는 아무런 하자(瑕疵)가 없습니다.
