|원문3=Dear Dr. Ellinwood,
Yours of Aug. 11 came to hand by the last mail in. You therein charge that the adjective unchristian' used by me in a former letter, was too violent and extreme and assert that heretofore you have avoided all such violent and extreme adjectives. All this may be true, although you nay have carefully avoided all extreme adjectives your letters have contained implications that have been ten times more extreme than any adjectives I have ever used. As to whence the letters come I do not know but as your signature is attached to them, I address you, not having any personal feelings against yourself but having very strong and what I feel to be just feelings concerning the matter contained in the letters.
|원문5=However as soon as your letter came, thinking that I might have been biased in my reading, I at once took yours of May 4th with a copy of my answer to it, to two ministers of the Gospel and without a word or comment asked them what they thought of your letter and whether my answer was too strong. They both at once made statements agreeing with my thought upon the matter and asserted that my language had not been too strong at all. Had they thought in any way that it had been, this letter would have brought to you an apology from me.
|원문6=As it is I still think that what I said was what I meant and I am one of those who believe that plain English is always easier than beating around the bush and will in the end as a rule bring about a more speedy and better understanding.
|원문7=Realizing that it may be said that these men out here are already biased I would add that I am willing to leave it to any unbiased judges and if they shall decide that the implication made in your letter of May 4th was just, charitable and Christian I will apologize.

지난번 우편물이 도착할 때 박사님의 틀:선교사편지편지태그를 받아 보게 되었습니다. 그 편지에서 제가 지난 번 서신의 내용 중 사용했던 ‘그리스도인답지 않은’이란 표현은 극도로 사실을 왜곡하는 것이라 책망하셨고, 박사님께서는 지금까지 그러한 격렬하고 과도한 표현은 삼가해 왔다고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러한 말씀이 사실일지도 모르겠습니다. 그렇지만 박사님께서 그러한 격렬한 느낌을 주는 표현을 애써 피하려 하셨다고는 해도 박사님 편지에는 제가 사용했던 것보다 열 배는 더 극단적인 의미를 암시하는 표현들이 있었습니다. 그 편지들이 어디에서 온 것들인지는 잘 모르겠지만 박사님의 서명이 있었기 때문에 말씀을 드리는 것입니다. 박사님께 대한 사적인 감정을 가지고 말씀을 드리는 것이 아니라 그 편지들에서 다루고 있는 문제에 대한 매우 단호하고도 정당한 감정을 가지고 말씀드리는 것입니다.
