To Dr . Ellinwood
Yours of the 25th of May just to hand and I would state that your former letter also came July 6 to hand but as the whole matter had to be dropped not on account of difficulties here but at home I thought that there was nothing further to be said upon the subject and therefore did not reply to yours of a former date. Might I however say, simply to show that my actions were not those of one who knew nothing of the state of affairs, that what I then wrote was only after the very urgent advice of Rev. H. Loomis of Yokohama, who I think knows almost more about Korea than any other Missionary in Japan, similar advice from Mr. Allen who was on the field; and the repeated assertions of all the Koreans that I met who had just come from their own land that it would be perfectly safe. I do not state this in any way as an answer to your letter but simply to show that my actions were not as far as Korea was concerned entirely out of place.
I am now hard at work at the language and am trying to make everything (next Line creased and covered up.)
I have, as I think I told you, secured the services of a Romanist as my teacher. I hesitated for some time about the matter not knowing whether it were well to use one of them or not but as he is by for the best teacher in the country (at least this is the name that he has every where) and came to us asking to be employed in this way I concluded to take him.
He has had a good deal of practice in teaching foreigners having taught some 7 or 8 of the Franciscan Fathers. and also had something to do in the compiling of the French Dictionary.
I was in a little doubt even after I had taken him as to whether it was a wise move but now feel quite confidant that it was providential. He came to me the other day and told me that the Fathers had refused him the sacraments if he continued to teach me and then on his insisting they had refused the sacraments to all the members of his family.
He said that some time ago the Fathers had told him that there were two kinds of religion theirs and heresy and that the latter was very bad but he thought that if it was really wrong he would be enabled to see it and that there would be no harm in his snowing something about it and he wanted me to teach him. He further stated that he had noticed that we read the Bible part of which had fallen into his hands some time ago but had been taken away from him by the fathers who had said that it was bad book and that he ought not to read it but that all that he had read was good and he wanted to read me more of it if I would let him. I, of course was only too glad to be able to do so but at present I cannot do very much in the way of teaching him myself as he does not know a word of English and I do not yet know Korean well enough to hold very long theological discussions in it.
Of course I have not forgotten that out here one has to be very careful with regard to the amount of trust that he places in the word of these men but as long as I find nothing to lead me to believe to the contrary I must take the man at his word and I certainly cannot refuse what does seem a very good opening up of some way for preparing for future usefulness by providence. I have a few boys come to me every morning and I am trying to teach them English. If I only had some building in which to have a school I could do so at once and have an abundance of pupils from the very start and if it would not be calling too much attention to my presence I think that I should try and pick out some 10 or 12 boys to teach who would be just enough to really be a help to me in learning the language and at the same time not enough to take any time away from the more direct study.
As you of course know by this time Dr. Allen has handed over to me the treasuryship of this mission. As out here at present we have to take money when we can get it welch is not always I at the suggestion of Dr. Allen took about two thousand dollars from Mr. Townsend so that we will have enough on hand for some time. Things are very high indeed here as almost every thing that we get has to be imported from Japan or Shanghai and even what native things we can use are to be had only at a very high price. We have thought it necessary to draw the Japan salary at least and trust that the board will sanction this as it is good deal more costly to live here than there.
As you know I suppose Dr. Allen had seen to a good deal of the repairing of the house that Dr. Heron is to occupy but it will still need some further repairs before it is finished. It was also thought well as the third house was vanishing piece by piece to have that made ready for dwelling in and this is now underway. As quite a number of new timbers had to be put in the place of those that were rotten or fast approaching it, it cost more than it would otherwise would have done. The total cost of this work which will make it habitable but will do nothing to the inside of the house nor will this include any painting will be about $590.00. It has been found necessary to at once see about the finishing of Dr. Heron's house and the men are now at work.
I suppose that you already know that the Korean refugees have some of them come to America. If they could be aided in some way by the board it might I think be a means of helping the work wonderfully in the future. Our Methodist Brethren are alive to this fact and are going to try and secure them all and attend to their education but might not at least some of these men be taught Christianity and civilization by the Presbyterians. The man who is most liked here and is the finest of the tree is Soh Kwang Pom. The others are very brutal, at least they showed themselves such during the last disturbance. Soh Kwang Pom has written over here to some of his friends requesting that if possible his mother be taught Christianity. I hope that some way may be found of doffing this.
Yours Truly,
