My Dear Dr. Brown,	브라운 박사님께,
I just want to drop you a line and tell you that work is going on well. Interest in Chicago is keen. It has been very much quickened by our presence here. I feel confident that one of the churches will take up the entire work at Kangkai station. Several others have spoken about taking up individuals, and yesterday Mr. Crowell asked me to call on him, and promised to give $10,000. concerning which I will write direct to Mr. Day. Of course this is only a beginning but we are expecting still greater things from this city. How much there is in store we do not definitely know, and even when we are through with our work here we expect that more will be following afterwards. I thought you would be glad to know of the good beginning that had been made.	박사님께 짧은 편지를 보내드리고 싶어 펜을 들었습니다. 사역은 잘 이루어져가고 있습니다. 시카고에서의 성과는 아주 뚜렷합니다. 우리가 여기 있음으로 해서 무척 일이 빨리 진행되었습니다. 저는 그 교회들 중 한 곳에서 강개 지부의 일을 전적으로 맡게 될 거라 확신합니다. 몇몇 다른 교회들은 “개별적으로 사람들을 후원하는 것이 어떤지”에 대하여 말을 합니다. 어제 크로웰 씨가 그를 방문해 10,000달러를 주기로 약속했습니다. 그것에 관해 저는 직접 데이 씨에게 편지를 쓸 겁니다. 물론 이것은 시작에 불과하지만 우리는 이 도시에서 훨씬 더 큰 것을 기대하고 있습니다. 얼마나 많은 것들이 준비되어 있는지 정확히는 잘 모릅니다. 여기서 우리의 일을 끝내고 난 후에도, 그 후에 더 많은 것이 따라 오리라 기대합니다. 시작이 잘 되었다는 것을 알게 되면 기뻐하실 것이라 생각했습니다.
I also want to say that I had a letter from Mrs. Moore and perhaps you have heard that she has just received the sad news that her eldest boy is tuberculous. This has been a great shock to her and she asks the earnest prayers of Christian people that her eldest lad may be completely cured. It has effected her nerves very severely.	그리고 무어 여사에게서 편지를 받았다는 말씀을 드리고 싶습니다. 아마도 박사님께서는 “무어 여사는 자신의 장남이 결핵에 걸렸다는 슬픈 소식을 이제 막 접했다”는 말을 들으셨을 겁니다. 이것은 무어 여사에게 큰 충격이었습니다. 그녀는 사람들에게 그 아들이 완전히 치유되도록 간절히 기도해달라고 부탁했습니다. 이 일로 무어 여사는 매우 큰 심적 고통을 겪었습니다.
I also heard from there that they had received an extra monthly allowance, but nothing had been said in regard to the cost of the cablegram. This I am sure is a mistake and I know you would want to know of it so as to have it rectified, as while in your office I had heard you say to Mr. Day that the matter ought to be paid, and she ought to have this amount of money. Whether it is a miscarrying of a letter or has been forgotten I do not know, but she needs the money, so I thought I would write on and ask about it.	저는 거기서 또한 그 사람들이 규정 외의 특별 봉급을 받았다고 들었습니다. 그러나 그 해외 전보의 비용에 대해서는 이야기된 것이 없었습니다. 저는 분명히 이것은 실수라 생각합니다. 그것을 바로 잡기 위해 박사님께서 그에 대해 알고 싶어 하신다는 것도 알고 있습니다. 박사님의 사무실에서 박사님께서 데이 씨에게 “그 일의 비용은 지불되어야 하며 그 여자 분이 이 액수의 돈을 받아야 한다”고 말씀하시는 것을 들었기 때문입니다. 편지가 잘못 전달 된 것인지 아니면 잊혀져 버린 것인지 잘 모르겠습니다. 그렇지만 그 여자 분에게는 그 돈이 필요합니다. 그래서 저는 그것에 대해 편지를 써서 물어 보아야 하겠다고 생각했습니다.
We would be very glad indeed to have constantly your prayers for the success of this work. We had a very pleasant interview with Mrs. McCormick, Mrs. Hubbard, and several others the other day, which all promised well, and more especially Mrs. Keep of this city called and stated that just at the present moment she could not state where she would put her funds, that she had looked at the various institutions that were needy, and had decided that she would do something for one or other of them, but she could not tell just now until later in the season. Her husband has recently died and has left the money somewhat tied up, but she is a woman of considerable means and earnest worker for Foreign Missions and I believe gave about ten thousand dollars last year to the Board.	이 일이 성공을 거둘 수 있도록 박사님께서 쉬지 않고 기도해 주셔서 참으로 감사드립니다. 저희는 며칠 전 맥코믹 여사, 허버드 여사, 그리고 몇몇 다른 분들과 아주 즐거운 만남을 가졌는데 모두들 󰡒많이 도와주겠다"고 약속했습니다. 특히 이 도시에 살고 있는 킵 여사가 찾아 와서, 󰡒여러 기관이 어려운 형편에 있는 것을 보았기 때문에, 현재로서는 자신의 기금을 어느 곳에 맡길지 말할 수 없다"고 하면서 그런 기관들 중 한, 두 곳에 기부하는 것을 결정했다고 했습니다. 그렇지만 󰡒겨울이 좀 더 지나고 나서야 어디에 기부할 것인지 말할 수 있을 것”이라 했습니다. 그녀의 남편은 최근에 사망하였는데 다소 까다로운 조건으로 돈을 묶어 놓았습니다. 그렇지만 그녀는 상당한 재산을 소유한 여성이며 해외 선교 본부를 위해 신실하게 일하는 사람입니다. 작년, 본부에 만 달러 정도를 기부했던 것으로 알고 있습니다.
I enclose herewith a little leaflet that we are using here in the city, and that seems to be meeting with success. We would be very glad indeed of any further suggestions that you may have for us. Plans for Cincinnati are also working well.	이 곳 시카고 시에서 우리가 사용하고 있는 작은 전단지를 동봉합니다. 이것으로 좋은 성과를 거둘 수 있을 것 같습니다. 앞으로 박사님께서 저희에 대해 제안해주시고자 하는 것을 말씀해 주신다면 정말 감사하겠습니다. 신시내티에서의 계획 또한 잘 이루어져 가고 있습니다.
