My dear Dr. Brown,
I have been meaning to write to you for some time past, and your recent letter to the Mission makes it so, that I want to get a letter off at once. There are three matters mentioned in your letter, concerning which I desire to speak.
First: In regard to Union. The Bishop of the Methodist Church and all members of their Mission with two or three exceptions are in favor of the closest union even down to real Church organic union. They have taken decided stands along the line of union in hospitals, schools, publications, and in fact in all institutional work; and they have stated that they are ready for even the larger union. The Southern Methodist Mission have been quite strong in this matter, and while there are one or two of their members who do not yet see how there can be an organic union between the Methodists and the Presbyterians, are yet willing to work and strive for it. In all such matters difficulties that would arise would be expected in the settling of details, and here is where difficulties are rising. While at the time of the Methodist Annual Meeting last summer and of the organization of the Evangelical Council in the Fall, there was great unanimity and oneness of purpose. Since that time, the Superintendent of the Methodist Mission, North, claims to have seen new light, and has withdrawn his approval of union in all lines but one, and that of publication. The Bishop told me personally that he however much disapproved of this attitude on the part of the Superintendent, and that at best in the annual meeting and in the decisions he would have but one vote; but that of course his voice in the matter would have more weight with the authorities in New York, than any other individual member of the Mission. I had a long conference with the Bishop and he is still heartily in favor of the closest union, but believes as most of us, that before such a union is consummated everything should be carefully thought and planned out. The Superintendent of the Methodist Mission now no longer believes in school union; but all the school authorities of both the Southern and the Northern Methodists and the Presbyterian Missions believe there should be a union in the Boys Schools. Bishop Harris believes that we should have union in our High Schools (when we have them), and in our Theological instructions. I was rather surprised at this, but he laughingly remarked that, some of the strongest timber in the Methodist Seminary had been turned out Princeton. Some members of our own Mission are not in favor of organic union: they believe that our work has developed so well, that for us, the union is not needed. Personally I believe that the establishing of a united Christian Church in Korea would do no little toward the speedy evangelisation of this land. Such a union if brought about at all, must be brought about with great care; every step carefully considered before taken; but there certainly would be a great conserving of Christian forces if it could be consummated.
Second: In regard to our Girls' School and the possible setting free of Mr. Convers' gift. Methodist schools at the present time are both full. They claim that they cannot accomodate more; and if this proves to be a fact, it may be that there will be no union in Girls' Schools. Excavations had been completed for the Girls' School, but work was at once stopped until we could be sure that the building was necessary. When we were discussing the matter last year, the Superintendent of the Methodists was in America and the matter was held in abeyance until her arrival. She returned just before Christmas, and I suppose the matter will come up for decision in a short time. If there is union, the amount appropriated will be per chance set free unless it should be needed in the union plant, but of course if such a thing should be contemplated, as the use of our Board funds on other than our own property, the plans in all details will be submitted to the Board. In fact this will be done in any circumstances.
Third: You spoke at some length in your letter in regard to Fusan and the discussion concerning transfers. It is not necessary to go into the whole details concerning Fusan. It suffices to say that, Dr. Irvin was put in a very hard and in fact an almost impossible position. He came back to a Mission that unanimously requested that he should not return. His associate in his own station, Mr. Sidebotham whom he had always looked upon as a friend had also voted against his return. Naturally in his own station the relations between the two would be considerably strained. Dr. Irvin came back having, I understand, been requested by the Board to let matters drop and let by-gones be by-gones. In this circumstance the old difficulties were not cleared up, and he feels that he is a persona non grata in the

course in Pedagogy, who would be suitable for this position; and have suggested that if there are any such who have the missionary spirit, that he will put them in communication with you. Men who feel that teaching is their calling are the ones that we need in a work such as this. At the present time, education in Korea especially under the care of missionaries will I think will receive considerable impetus. The Koreans are more and more realising that, had the people of the land generally been better educated, they might have been better able to ward off the disgrace that has overtaken them as a nation. Then the announcement by the present Adviser in the Educational Department that, he plans for Korea a system based not on that has been the gradual development of his own people, but on that the Japanese have planned for the bearly half educated Ryuku Islanders, will turn the thoughts of the people more towards our schools than formerly. I think that at the present time, if plans are carefully prepared, that the people are ready for a pretty wide system of education that might be largely under the care of the Mission aries, and thus a Christian influence.
그리고 그가_______________에서 기피 대상의 인물(person non grata)이라고 생각_______________.

But I must be closing, with kindest regards to you and Mrs. Brown from Mrs. Underwood and myself,
Yours sincerely,
H. G. Underwood
