2001년 초 WhatOnStage.com에서 그 해의 Laurence Olivier Awards의 후보자 명단을 개제하고 사이트 방문자가 온라인에서 투표를 통해 수상자를 투표하도록 진행하였다. 2주일 만에 5,000명 가량이 참여하였으며 그 결과가 Olivier 운영위원회의 판단과 크게 달랐고 이를 활용화여 WhatOnStage.com의 편집자는 투표 결과 목록을 작성하여 2003년에 이를 발표하는 시사회를 개최하였고 그렇게 WhatOnStge Awards가 시작하게 되었다. 2008년 시상식부터는 콘서트도 도입되었다.
