Almost one year ago, the Orthodox Church in Korea was blessed by a visit from His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. For one week, His All Holiness spent his time in prayer, worship, and fellowship with the faithful Orthodox believers of Korea as well as various diplomats and politicians. He prayed for the reunification of the Korean peninsula and met with President Moon to discuss the reunification process.
Alongside these activities, His All Holiness also hosted an International Symposium on the Environment entitled, "Ecology, Theology, and Human Dignity in the Orthodox Christian Tradition." 

Below are the complete Symposium Lectures given by His All Holiness as well as Metropolitan Ambrosios of Korea, Very Rev Archimandrite Maximos Constas, Professor Gayle E. Woloschak, and Rev. Deacon Perry Hamalis. Included are the opening remarks made by Rev. Lee Hong-Jung, General Secretary of the NCCK and Fr. Lee Jai-Don. Following the lectures is the panel discussion where the presenters were able to address the audience’s questions and elaborate on the themes and topics discussed in their lectures. Closing remarks by Metropolitan Ambrosios of Korea were given by Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Na of St. Paul’s Orthodox Church in Incheon.

<p>In the past few decades, the world has witnessed alarming environmental degradation – with climate change, the loss of biodiversity and the pollution of natural resources – and the widening gap between rich and poor, as well as increasing failure to implement environmental policies.[1] During the same decade, one religious leader has discerned the signs of the times and called people's attention to this ecological and social situation.</p>

<p>His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has persistently proclaimed the primacy of spiritual values in determining environmental ethics and action. His endeavors have earned him the title "Green Patriarch" – coined and publicized by the media in 1996, while being formalized in the White House in 1997 by Al Gore, Vice President of the United States. In 2008, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World for "defining environmentalism as a spiritual responsibility."</p>

==Initiatives and activities - 계획 과 활동==
<p>The environmental initiatives of the Ecumenical Patriarchate date back to the mid-1980s with the third session of the Pre-Synodal Pan-Orthodox Conference held in Chambésy (1986). Representatives at this meeting expressed concern for the abuse of the natural environment, especially in affluent western societies. The emphasis was on leaving a better world for future generations. Several Inter-Orthodox meetings followed on the subject of 'Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation' and attended by Orthodox representatives.</p>
<p>바르톨로메오스 세계총대주교의 환경 계획은 참베시(1986년)에서 개최된 시노달 전 범조직회의 제3차 회의를 시작으로 즉 1980년대 중반까지 거슬러 올라간다. 이 회의의 대표들은 특히 부유한 서구 사회의 자연환경 남용을 우려했다. 그들은 미래 세대와 더 나은 세상을 위해 남겨주자고 한 것을 강조한 것이다. 수차례 여러 정교회 회의에서(Inter-Orthodox) ‘정의, 평화, 그리고 창조의 진실성’ 이란 주제로 여러 정교회 대표자들이 회의에 참석하였다.</p>
<p>One such consultation was held in Patmos, Greece (1988), to mark the 900th anniversary of the historic Monastery of St John the Theologian. The then Ecumenical Patriarch Demetrios assigned Metropolitan John (Zizioulas) of Pergamon as Patriarchal representative to this conference entitled 'Revelation and the Future of Humanity' and organized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate with the support of the Greek Ministry of Cultural Affairs and in cooperation with the local civil authorities. One of the primary recommendations of this conference was that the Ecumenical Patriarchate should designate one day each year for the protection of the natural environment.</p>
<p>그리스 파트모스(1988년)에서 신학자인 성 요한 수도원 900주년을 맞아 이런 협의가 열렸다. 당시 데메트리오스 총대주교는 페르가몬(Pergamon)의 대주교 존(John Zizioulas)을 이번 “개혁과 인류의 미래"를 주제로 한 총회 대표로 임명하고 그리스 문화부의 지원 및 지방 시민당국과 협력하여 총대주교청이 주관하였다. 이 총회의 주요 권고 사항은 생태학 총대주교청에서 매년 하루를 특정 환경보호의 날로 지정해야 한다는 것이었다.</p>
<p>In 1989, the same Patriarch Demetrios published the first encyclical letter on the environment. This encyclical, proclaimed on the occasion of the first day of the new ecclesiastical calendar, formally established 1 September as a day for all Orthodox Christians within the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to offer prayers for the preservation of the natural creation. A similar encyclical is published annually on the first day of September.</p>
<p>1989년에 데메트리오스 총대주교는 환경에 관한 최초의 회칙을 발간했다. 이 회칙은 새로운 성년 달력의 첫날을 계기로 선포되었으며, 공식적으로 9월 1일을 세계 총대주교 내의 모든 정교회 신자들이 자연창조의 보존을 위해 기도하는 날로 제정하였다. 이와 유사한 회칙이 매년 9월 첫째 날에 출판된다.</p>
<p>In 1990, the foremost hymnographer on Mount Athos, Monk Gerasimos Mikrayiannanites, was commissioned by the Ecumenical Patriarchate to compose a service of supplication for the environment. Whereas in the past Orthodox faithful prayed to be delivered from natural calamities, they were now called to pray that the planet may be delivered from the abusive and destructive acts of human beings.</p>
<p>1990년 아토스 산의 최고 찬송가 작가인 수도사 게라시모스 미카레이안나니테스(Monk Gerasimos Mikrayiannanites)는 세계 총대주교청으로부터 환경을 위한 탄원서를 작성하라는 의뢰를 받았다. 과거 정교회의 신자들은 그들의 진실된 기도가 자연 재해로 전해지기를 바라는 반면, 그들은 이제 이 행성이 인간의 학대적이고 파괴적인 행위로부터 전해지기를 기도하기 위해 소집되었다.</p>
<p>A month after his election in 1991, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew convened an ecological gathering in Crete entitled 'Living in the Creation of the Lord'. That convention was opened by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and International Chairman of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). In the following year, Patriarch Bartholomew called an unprecedented meeting of all Orthodox Patriarchs and Primates at the Phanar, submitting an historical expression of unity and inviting all Orthodox leaders to inform their churches about the critical significance of this issue for our times. The Primates endorsed 1 September as a day of pan-Orthodox prayer for the environment.</p>

==Seminars and symposia 세미나와 심포시아==
<p>In the summer of 1992, the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Phanar for an environmental convocation at the Theological School of Halki. In November 1993, the Ecumenical Patriarch returned the visit, meeting with the Duke at Buckingham Palace where they sealed a friendship of common purpose and active cooperation for the preservation of the environment. In June 1994, an ecological seminar was convened at the historic Theological School of Halki, the first of five successive annual summer seminars on diverse aspects of the environment: Religious Education (1994), Ethics (1995), Communications (1996), Justice (1997), and Poverty (1998). These seminars, the first held at such a level in any Orthodox Church context, were designed to promote environmental awareness and action, engaging leading theologians, environmentalists, scientists, civil servants and especially students.</p>
<p>1992년 여름 에든버러 공작은 신학계 할키에 있는 환경집회를 방문하였다. 1993년 11월, 세계총대주교는 다시 버킹엄 궁에서 공작을 만나 환경보전을 위한 공동의 목적으로 우정을 확인하고 적극적 협력을 하기로 하였다. 1994년 6월, 생태학 세미나가 역사적으로 유명한 신학전문학교인 할라키 대학교에서 개최되었으며, 다섯번의 연례 세미나 중 첫 번째 주제로 환경의 다양한 측면과 종교 교육(1994년), 윤리(1995년), 통신(1996년), 정의(1997년) 그리고 빈곤(1998년)을 주제로 개최되었다. 이런 세미나들은 어떤 정교회 맥락에서도 이정도 수준의 주제로 개최된 것은 처음이며, 환경론자, 과학자, 공무원, 특히 학생들을 이끄는 환경 인식과 행동을 촉진하기 위해 고안되었다.</p>
<p>In October 1994, the University of the Aegean conferred an honorary doctoral degree on Patriarch Bartholomew, the first of a series of awards and honorary degrees presented to the Patriarch in recognition of his efforts and initiatives for the environment. In November 2000, the New York-based organization Scenic Hudson presented the Ecumenical Patriarch with the first international Visionary Award for Environmental Achievement. In 2002, Patriarch Bartholomew was the recipient of the Sophie Prize in Norway and the Binding Environmental Prize in Liechtenstein, each presented to an individual or organization that has pioneered environmental awareness and action.</p>

<p>Convinced that any appreciation of the environmental concerns of our times must occur in dialogue with other Christian confessions, other religious faiths, as well as scientific disciplines, in 1994 Patriarch Bartholomew established the Religious and Scientific Committee. Chaired by Metropolitan John of Pergamon, its extraordinary events are coordinated by Ms. Maria Becket. To date, the Religious and Scientific Committee has hosted seven international, interdisciplinary and inter-religious symposia to reflect on the fate of the rivers and seas, and to force the pace of religious debate on the natural environment.</p>
<p>우리 시대의 환경문제에 대한 어떠한 공감도 다른 기독교적 고백과의 대화속에서 또한 다른 종교의 믿음과, 과학 분야에서 일어나야 한다고 확신했으며, 그리하여 1994년 바르톨로메오스 세계총대주교는 “종교와 과학위원회”를 설립하였다.  퍼가몬의 대주교 존이 의장직을 맡았으며 이 전례없는 행사는 마리아 베켓 양에 의해 편성되었다. 지금까지 종교과학위원회는 강과 바다의 운명을 성찰하고 자연환경에 대한 종교논쟁의 속도를 올리기 위해 국제, 학제, 종교간 심포지아를  7차례 주최했다.</p>

===Symposium I: Revelation and the Environment - 심포지엄 1: 묵시록과 환경=== 
<p>Symposium I: Revelation and the Environment convened in September 1995 under the joint auspices of Patriarch Bartholomew and Prince Philip on the occasion of the 1900th anniversary of St John's Book of Revelation. In his opening address, Patriarch Bartholomew noted: 'The earth has been hurt (Rev. 7.3) Conscious of the threat of nuclear destruction and environmental pollution, we shall move toward one world or none.'</p>
<p>심포지엄 1: 묵시록과 환경 1900주년을 맞아 바르톨로메오스 세계총대주교와 필립공의 공동 주최로 1995년 9월에 “계시와 환경” 이란 주제로 개최되었다. 바르톨로메오스 세계총대주교는 개회사에서 '지구가 피해를 입었다(개헌 7.3) 핵 파괴와 환경 오염의 위협을 의식하여 우리는 한 세계로 나아갈 것이다, 그렇지 않으면 아무도 살지 못할 것이다.’라고 언급했다.</p>

===Symposium II: The Black Sea in Crisis - 심포지엄 2: “위기의 흑해”===
<p>Symposium II: The Black Sea in Crisis was held in September 1997 under the joint auspices of the Ecumenical Patriarch and HE Jacques Santer, President of the European Commission. This symposium undertook a concrete case study, visiting the countries that surround the Black Sea and engaging in conversation with local religious leaders and environmental activists, as well as regional scientists and politicians.</p>
<p>심포지엄 2: “위기의 흑해”는 1997년 9월 세계총대주교와 HE Jacques Santer 유럽연합 집행위원장의 공동 주최로 개최되었다. 이 심포지엄은 구체적인 사례 연구를 실시하여 흑해를 둘러싸고 있는 나라들을 방문하고 지역 종교 지도자들과 환경 운동가들, 지역 과학자들과 정치인들과 대화를 나누었다.</p>
<p>A direct result of this symposium, the Halki Ecological Institute was organized in June 1999 to promote wider regional collaboration and education among 75 clergy and theologians, educators and students, as well as scientists and journalists. This initiative marked a new direction in interdisciplinary vision and dialogue, implementing the ecological theory of the Religious and Scientific Committee into practice.</p>
<p>이 심포지엄의 직접적인 결과로, 할키생태학연구소는 75명의 성직자와 신학자, 교육자, 학생들, 과학자와 언론인들 사이의 광범위한 지역적 협력과 교육을 촉진하기 위해 1999년 6월에 설립되었다. 이 시책은 종교과학위원회의 생태 이론을 실천에 옮기면서 학문 간 비전과 대화의 새로운 방향을 제시하였다.</p>

<p>Symposium III: River of Life – Down the Danube to the Black Sea was launched in October 1999, under the joint auspices of Patriarch Bartholomew and HE Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission. Participants traveled the length of the Danube River, from Germany to the Ukraine in the aftermath of the military and ethnic conflict in the Former Yugoslavia.</p>
<p>심포지엄 3: “생명의 강 – 다뉴브 강을 따라 흑해로”란 주제로 1999년 10월 바르톨로메오스 세계총대주교와 로마노 프로디 대주교(Metropolitan Romano Prodi) 유럽위원회 총재의 공동 후원 아래 시작되었다. 참가자들은 독일에서 우크라이나까지 다뉴브 강 전체를 여행했으며, 그 지역은 예전 유고슬라비아 지역으로 군사 및 민족 분쟁이 있었던 곳이었다.</p>

===Symposium IV: The Adriatic Sea – a Sea at Risk, a Unity of Purpose - 심포지엄 4: “아드리아 해 – 위험에 처한 바다, 목표의 통일”===
<p>Symposium IV: The Adriatic Sea – a Sea at Risk, a Unity of Purpose addressed the ethical aspects of the environmental crisis. Held in June 2002, under the joint auspices of the Ecumenical Patriarch and HE Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission, this symposium opened in Durres, Albania, and concluded in Venice, Italy, where Patriarch Bartholomew co-signed a document of environmental ethics with Pope John Paul II via satellite link-up. The 'Venice Declaration' is the first joint text of the two leaders on ecological issues.</p>
<p>심포지엄 4: “아드리아 해 – 위험에 처한 바다, 목표의 통일”은 환경 위기의 윤리적 측면을 다루었다. 2002년 6월, 유럽위원회 위원장 로마노 프로디 대주교의 공동 주최로 개최된 이 심포지엄은 알바니아 두레스에서 개최되어, 바르톨로뮤 총대주교가 위성을 통해 교황 요한 바오로 2세와 환경 윤리 문서를 공동 서명하고 이탈리아 베네치아에서 마무리되었다. '베니스 선언'은 생태학적 문제에 대한 두 정상의 첫 번째 합동 문서다.</p>

===Symposium V: The Baltic Sea - A Common Heritage, A Shared Responsibility- 심포지엄 5: “발트해 - 공통유산, 공유책임제”===
<p>Symposium V: The Baltic Sea - A Common Heritage, A Shared Responsibility was organized in June 2003. The end of the Cold War has permitted the renewal of political, economic, social, cultural and religious ties between this region and countries comprising the European Union, and the wider world. Organized under the patronage of the Ecumenical Patriarch and HE Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission, the symposium also resulted in the North Sea Conference, co-sponsored by the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Church of Norway.</p>
<p>심포지엄 5: “발트해 - 공통유산, 공유책임제”가 2003년 6월에 조직되었다. 냉전의 종식은 이 지역과 유럽연합, 그리고 더 넓은 세계를 구성하는 국가들 간의 정치적, 경제적, 사회적, 문화적, 종교적 유대관계의 부활을 가능하게 했다. 유럽위원회 위원장 로마노 프로디 대주교의 후원 아래 조직된 이 심포지엄은 또한 북해 회의로, 세계총대주교와 노르웨이의 교회가 공동 주최하는 결과를 낳았다.</p>

===Symposium VI: The Amazon: Source of Life - 심포지엄 6: “아마존: 생명의 원천”===
<p>Symposium VI: The Amazon: Source of Life was held in July 2006 on the Amazon River under the patronage of the Ecumenical Patriarch and HE Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations. This symposium concentrated on the global dimension of problems stemming directly from the Amazon, problems which have, perhaps, dropped out of view for many decision-makers.</p>
<p>심포지엄 6: “아마존: 생명의 원천”은 2006년 7월 아마존 강에서 세계총대주교와 코피 아난 (Kofi Annan, 유엔 사무총장) 유엔 사무총장의 후원으로 개최되었다. 이 심포지엄에서는 아마도 많은 의사 결정자들이 간과하고 있었던 세계적 시각 차원의 문제적 흐름을 아마존에 집중하였다.</p>

===Symposium VII: The Arctic – Mirror of Life - 심포지엄 7: “북극 – 생명의 거울”===
<p>Symposium VII: The Arctic – Mirror of Life was held in the fall of 2007, directing its attention to the Arctic Sea. Under the joint auspices of Their Excellencies Mr. Jose Barroso (President of the European Commission) and Mr. Kofi Annan (former Secretary-General of the United Nations), the symposium considered the plight of indigenous populations, the fragility of the sea ice, and the encroachment of oil exploration in a region considered to be one of the first victims of human-induced climate change.</p>

===Symposium VIII: The Great Mississippi River: Restoring Balance - 심포지엄 8: “미시시피강: 균형의 회복”===
<p>Symposium VIII: The Great Mississippi River: Restoring Balance was held on October 18-25, 2009. Of the world's greatest rivers, the Mississippi is among those which has fallen most completely under human domination. With a total length of 3778 kilometers and the third largest drainage basin on earth, a chain of cities along its length has discharged domestic and industrial waste into the Mississippi for nearly two centuries. Yet the fate of the Mississippi waters is an ethical crisis. The exploitation of the great river produces catastrophic human and natural consequences, as observed in the lessons of the Katrina hurricane. The Mississippi is a challenge not only to human responsibility for the environment but, indeed, to democracy itself.</p>
<p>심포지엄 8: “미시시피강: 균형의 회복”은 2009년 10월 18일부터 25일까지 열렸다. 세계에서 가장 큰 강들 중 미시시피강은 인간의 영향력을 가장 많이 받는 강들 중 하나이다. 총 길이는 3778km이고 지구상에서 세 번째로 큰 배수구를 가진 일련의 도시들은 거의 2세기 동안 국내와 산업 폐기물을 미시시피강으로 배출해 왔다. 그러나 아직 미시시피 해역의 운명은 윤리적 위기에 머물러 있다. 이 거대한 강에서 일어난 착취는 카트리나 허리케인에서 보여주는 교훈 처럼 인간과 자연에게 결론적으로 큰 재앙을 생산하고 있다. 미시시피강 문제는 환경에 대한 인간의 책임 일 뿐만 아니라 확실히 민주주의 자체에 대한 도전이다.</p> 
<p>Since 2009, His All-Holiness has continued and expanded his ecological initiatives and influence through focused conferences with high-level academics and activists, who have met in Istanbul for Halki Summit I (with such participants as Jane Goodall and Bill McKibben) and Halki Summit II (with Terry Eagleton and Raj Patel), co-sponsored by the Southern University of New Hampshire, but also by historical pronouncements with world leaders, including Pope Francis.</p>
<p>2009년부터 세계총대주교 성하께서는 그의 생태학적 계획과 영향력을 고위 등급의 교육 기관과 활동가들과의 회의를 통하여 확장시키고 있었다. 이들 활동가들은 이스탄불에서 할라키 1 정상회의에서(Jane Goodall 그리고 Bill McKibben), 할라키 2 정상회의(Terry Eagleton, Raj Patel 등 참가자들과)에서 만난 사람들이다. 위 회의는 뉴햄프셔 주립 대학교에서 공동 후원을 받았으며 그러나 또한 역사적인 세계의 지도자들 그리고 프랜시스 교황까지 포함하여 공표한 상태였다.</p>
 
==Environment and spirituality - 환경과 영성==
<p>With reference to the environmental initiatives and actions, what is perhaps most characteristic of the Patriarch's initiatives is the mark of humility. The Ecumenical Patriarch is able to see the larger picture. He recognizes that he is standing before something greater than himself, a world before which he must kneel, a chain that long predates and will long outlast him. Therefore, he speaks of self-emptying (kenosis) (Phil. 2.4-11), ministry (diakonia) (Luke 10.40; Acts 1.17, 25; 6.4), witness (martyria, a term which also has the sense of martyrdom and suffering) (John 1.7, 19), and thanksgiving (or eucharistia, a term which also implies liturgy) (Acts 24.3; 2 Cor. 4.15).</p>

<p>The emphasis is always on humble simplicity – the technical term in Orthodox spirituality is asceticism (askeo – to work up raw material with skill, to exercise by training or discipline; Acts 24.16) and on liturgy (ministration, ministry, service) as the essential source of Orthodox theology. The notion of liturgy leads us into what is perhaps the most distinctive feature of the Patriarch's vision, namely the concept of communion (koinonia – which also means communication and fellowship; 1 Cor. 10.16; Phil. 6).</p>

<p>Some of the central Scriptural passages or events that comprise the foundation for the Ecumenical Patriarch's conviction about the sacred commission and obligation to protect the environment include the creation of the world by the loving Creator (Genesis 1.26), Genesis 2.15 (about the need to serve and preserve creation), Genesis 9.8-17 (about the covenant between God and the world), and Ezekiel 34.18-19 (about using and not abusing creation), as well as the Lord's Beatitudes (Matthew 5.2-12) and Transfiguration on Mt. Tabor (Mark 9.2-3).</p>
<p>신성한 위원회의 환경보호 의무에 대한, 세계 총대주교의 신념에 토대를 이루는 중심 성경 구절이나 사건은 사랑하는 창조주(Genesis 1.26), 창세기 2.15(창조를 섬기고 보존해야 할 필요성), 창세기 9.8-17(하느님과 세상의 언약에 대하여) 등이 있다. 그리고 에제키엘 34.18-19 (창조를 이용하거나 남용하지 않는 것에 관한 것), 그리고 주님의 고행 (매타 5.2-12), 타볼산의 변모 등이 있다 (마크 9.2-3).
<p>For Patriarch Bartholomew, this is a matter of truthfulness to God, humanity and the created order. He condemns environmental abuse as nothing less than sin! At Santa Barbara in November 1997, he declared:
To commit a crime against the natural world is a sin. For human beings to cause species to become extinct and to destroy the biological diversity of God's creation; for human beings to degrade the integrity of the earth by causing changes in its climate, by stripping the earth of its natural forests, or by destroying its wetlands; for human beings to injure other human beings with disease by contaminating the earth's waters, its land, its air, and its life, with poisonous substances – all of these are sins.</p>
<p>바르톨로메오스 세계총대주교에게 이것은 하느님, 인류, 그리고 창조된 질서에 대한 진실성의 문제다. 그는 환경 학대를 죄악 못지 않게 비난한다! 1997년 11월 산타 바바라에서 그는 다음과 같이 선언했다.

<p>The environment is not only a political or a technological issue; it is, as Patriarch Bartholomew likes to underline, primarily a religious and spiritual issue. Patriarch Bartholomew invariably relates the environment to a familiar aspect of Orthodox spirituality, namely to the icons that decorate Orthodox churches. Symbols are important in Orthodox thought, worship and life. Creation itself is likened to an icon, just as the human person is created 'in the image and likeness of God' (Gen. 1.26 and Col. 1.15). The Patriarch invites people to contemplate the Creator God through the icon of the created world (Col. 1.16-18). In the same vein, Patriarch Bartholomew refers to the human beings as endowed by God to serve as 'priests', underlining that personal responsibility for the physical world and the slightest action of even the feeblest among us can change the world for the better.</p>
<p>환경은 정치적이거나 기술적인 문제일 뿐만 아니라, 바르톨로메오스 세계총대주교가 강조하기를 좋아하는 것처럼, 주로 종교적이고 영적인 쟁점이다. 바르톨로메오스 세계총대주교는 환경을 정교회의 친숙한 측면, 즉 정교회를 장식하는 아이콘과 항상 연관시킨다. 기호는 정교 사상, 예배, 생활에서 중요하다. 창조 자체는 인간이 '신의 이미지와 닮음'(Gen. 1.26, Col. 1.15)에서 창조되는 것처럼 아이콘에 비유된다. 총대주교는 창조된 세계의 아이콘(Col. 1.16-18)을 통해 창조주 하나님을 생각하도록 사람들을 초대한다. 같은 맥락에서 바르톨로메오스 세계총대주교는 신으로부터 부여받은 인간들을 가리켜, 물리적 세계에 대한 개인적인 책임과 우리 사이의 가장 작은 행동조차도 세상을 더 나은 방향으로 변화시킬 수 있다는 것을 강조한다.</p>
<p>Finally, the Ecumenical Patriarch is aware that environmental issues are intimately connected to and dependent on numerous other social issues of our times, including war and peace, justice and human rights, poverty and unemployment. It is not by chance that the term 'eco-justice' has been used in religious circles to describe this interconnection between creation and creatures, between the world and its inhabitants. We have, in recent years, become increasingly aware of the effects of environmental degradation on people, and especially the poor.</p>
<p>마지막으로, 환경문제는 전쟁과 평화, 정의와 인권, 가난과 실업을 포함한 우리 시대의 수많은 다른 사회문제와 밀접하게 연관되어 있고 의존하고 있다는 것을 세계총대주교는 알고 있다. '환경 정의'라는 용어가 종교계에서 창조와 창조물, 세계와 그 거주민들 사이의 이러한 상호관계를 묘사하기 위해 사용된 것은 우연이 아니다. 최근 몇 년 동안 우리는 환경 파괴가 사람들, 특히 가난한 사람들에게 미치는 영향에 대해 점점 더 많이 인식하게 되었다.</p>
 
==Worldview and vision - 세계관과 비전==
<p>Unfortunately, we tend to forget our connection to the earth and our environment. There is a binding unity and continuity that we share with all of God's creation. In recent years, we have been reminded of this truth with flora and fauna extinction, with soil and forest clearance, and with noise, air and water pollution. Concern for the environment is not an expression of superficial or sentimental love. It is a way of honoring and dignifying our creation by the hand and word of God. It is a way of listening to 'the groaning of creation' (Rom. 8.22).</p>
<p>불행하게도, 우리는 지구와 우리의 환경과의 연관성을 잊어버리는 경향이 있다. 우리는 신의 창조물들과 공유하는 구속력 있는 단결과 연속성이 있다. 최근 몇 년 동안, 우리는 식물과 동물원의 멸종, 토양과 숲의 간극, 그리고 소음, 공기, 그리고 수질 오염과 같은 진실을 상기 시키고 있었다. 환경에 대한 걱정은 피상적이거나 감상적인 사랑의 표현이 아니다. 그것은 신의 손과 말에 의해 우리의 창조물을 존경하고 고상하게 하는 방법이다. '창조의 신음'을 듣는 방법이다(롬. 8.22).</p>
<p>We tend to call this crisis an 'ecological' crisis, which is a fair description in so far as its results are manifested in the ecological sphere. Yet, the crisis is not first of all ecological. It is a crisis concerning the way we perceive reality, the way we imagine or image our world. We treat our planet in an inhuman, god-forsaken manner precisely because we see it in this way, precisely because we see ourselves in this way. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew offers a refreshing, alternative way of seeing ourselves in relation to the natural world.
As a religious leader, the Ecumenical Patriarch's initiatives to protect the environment are worthy of emulation. His worldview, derived from the ancient values of the Orthodox Christian Church, deserves attention.</p>
<p>우리는 이 위기를 '생태계' 위기라고 부르는 경향이 있는데, 그 결과가 생태계 영역에 나타나 있는 한 그것은 분명한 표현이다. 하지만, 이 위기는 가장 우선시 되는 생태학적 위기가 아니다. 그것은 우리가 현실을 인식하는 방식, 우리가 세계를 상상하거나 상상하는 방식과 관련된 위기다. 우리는 지구를 비인간적이고, 신을 모독하는 태도로 대한다. 왜냐하면 우리는 지구를 이런 식으로 보기 때문이다. 정확히 우리가 우리 자신을 그런 방식으로 보기 때문이다. 생태계 총대주교 바르톨로메오스는 자연계와 관련하여 우리 자신을 신선하고 대안적인 방식으로 볼 수 있다.
