of Seoul. Gangwha is a rich historic past as it is the 'gateway' into Korea. Towards the end of the 19th century, Korea opened its borders after a lengthy time of being a closed and protected
'Hermit Nation', as William Griffis' remarked in his 1882 book Corea: The Hermit Nation. It might do well to mention that Griffis never set foot in the country, nor spoke the language, and
had no experience of Korea whatsoever.
