To Dr . Ellinwood	엘린우드인물 박사님께,
I was very much surprised to find that you so miss-read and miss-interpreted my Letter of Sept. 17th. I had intended to have answered yours by the last mail but being unable to asked Dr. Heron___________ to in his letter to you. In your letter you urge that the difficulties here be smoothed over, that we all become reconciled, and that we withdraw our resignations I and yet the very position taken by you in your letters concerning our reasons for resigning must not only at least postpone if it does not entirely annihilate the possibility of a reconciliation, but so places Dr. Heron and I that, did we wish to, we could not withdraw our resignations until at least our reasons for resigning and not those that have come from some one's else fertile brain are taken as our reasons.	지난 9월 17일 보낸 드린 편지자료에 대해 박사님께서 그렇게 많이 오해하셨다는 것을 알게 되어서 무척 놀랐습니다. 지난 번 편지로 박사님께 답신을 하려 했습니다만 헤론인물 의사가 그분께 보내드리는 편지에서 그분께________해달라고 요청할 수는 없었습니다. 박사님의 편지에서 박사님께서는 “이곳의 어려운 문제들을 가라앉혀야 하고 우리 모두는 화해해야 하며 우리의 사퇴의사를 철회해야 한다”고 강하게 말씀하셨습니다. 그렇지만 박사님의 편지에서, 우리가 사퇴하려는 이유에 대해 박사님께서 취하신 입장은 화해의 가능성을 전적으로 없애 버리는 것은 아니라 해도 뒤로 미루어지게 하는 것이었습니다. 뿐만 아니라 박사님께서는 헤론 의사와 제 입장을 대단히 곤란하게 하셔서 우리의 사퇴의사를 철회할 수 없게 하였습니다. 적어도, 우리가 말씀드린 이유가 머리를 잘 쓰는 사람들이 둘러댄 이유가 아니라 우리가 사퇴하려는 정당한 이유로 받아들여질 때까지는 말입니다.
You tell us in your letter that our only reasons for resigning are paltry personal ones and, if this is a fact, if the reasons stated in our letters were false, if from paltry jealousy and bitterness' Dr. Heron and I have been led to hand in our resignations to the Board and if our statement that they were written after and prayerful consideration, are not true; we must indeed be hypocrites of the worst stamp and men whom the Presbyterian Church ought to be glad to get rid of.	박사님께서는 편지에서 우리가 사퇴하려는 이유는 천박하고 사사로운 것이라 하셨습니다. 만일 이것이 사실이라면, 우리가 보내드린 편지에서 열거한 이유가 거짓이라면, 천박한 시기심과 반감으로 인해 헤론인물 의사와 제가 본부공간에 사의 표명을 한 것이라면, 우리가 사퇴하려는 이유에 대한 진술 내용과 기도하는 마음으로 생각했던 것들이 진실하지 않은 것이라면, 우리는 참으로 가증스러운 위선자들이며 장로교회에서 쫓아 내 버려야 할 사람들임에 틀림없습니다.
You tell us that for these mere personal differences we are deserting our post and betraying our trust. This we deny emphatically. We had no contemplation of deserting our post. It seemed to us after prayerfully considering the subject, the best thing to do in the interest of the cause of Christ and much as it may seem to you a thing to be desired, to leave one denomination where you are known and with whom you have been working for another where you are entirely unknown and with whom you have not worked; to run the risks as the Superintendent of the Methodist mission here plainly told us, of being cut loose from our own church, not wanted by the Methodists and left out here in a heathen land with no visible means of support; I can assure you that it was no pleasant prospect to our eyes and that though we saw clearly what might be before us we felt that it was our duty to sacrifice ourselves for the cause of Christ and we said to each other that while we trusted that the Lord would take care of us we were willing should he demand it to be beggars in a strange land.	박사님께서는 단지 개인적인 차이점을 구실 삼아 우리가 우리의 자리를 떠나려 하며 우리에게 있었던 신뢰를 저버리려 한다고 말씀하셨습니다. 우리는 이에 대해 단호하게 부정하는 바입니다. 우리는 우리 자신의 자리를 떠나려했던 의도가 추호도 없었습니다. 기도하며 그 문제에 대해 심사숙고 해 본 후에 이러한 상황에서 그리스도를 가장 영예롭게 할 수 있고, 박사님께도 바람직하게 보일 수 있는 일은 우리의 교단을 떠나는 것이라 생각했던 것입니다. 우리는 박사님과 친숙하고 박사님과 동역하는 사람들이 있는 교단을 떠나서 박사님과 전혀 친숙하지 않고 박사님과 동역하는 사람들이 있지 않은 교단으로 옮겨가는 것이 좋다고 생각했을 뿐입니다. 감리교 선교부의 감독자로 일하며 감리교 사람들에게도 환영받지 못하면서, 우리가 속해 있던 본 교회와 멀어지게 되어 이곳 이방 땅에서 아무런 도움도 받지 못한 채 남아 있게 되는 위험을 감수하고서라도 말입니다. 그것은 전혀 우리에게 기대감을 갖게 하는 일이 아니었다는 것을 확실히 말씀드릴 수 있습니다. 그렇지만 우리 앞에 그 무엇이 놓여 있다 하여도 그리스도를 위하여 어떤 어려움이라도 감수하는 것이 우리의 할 일이라 생각했습니다. 그리고 주님께서 우리를 돌보아 주시는 것을 믿기 때문에 주님께서 명하신다면 이 낯선 땅에서 무일푼으로라도 기꺼이 있겠다고 서로에게 말했습니다.
Now to a few of the items mentioned in your letter. You try to persuade me that Dr. Allen is no enemy of mine. Of this I had never dreamt. Dr. Allen and I are on good terms personally but as I stated in my letter we cannot work together in harmony. Wherever we work together we do not get along and I know that were we in distinct mission we would be on the best of terms and this I stated to you in my letter of Sept 17th in about the middle of page 4.	이제, 박사님의 편지에서 언급하셨던 몇 가지 사항에 대해 말씀드리고자 합니다. 박사님께서는 제게 알렌인물의사는 제 적(敵)이 아니라고 설득조로 말씀하셨습니다. 저는 꿈에도 알렌 의사가 제 적이라고 생각해보지 않았습니다. 개인적으로 알렌 의사와 저는 좋은 관계를 맺고 있으나 제 편지에서 말씀드렸던 것처럼 알렌 의사와 제가 함께 조화롭게 일할 수 없다는 것뿐입니다. 그와 제가 함께 일할 때마다 우리는 불편해집니다. 그와 제가 별개의 사역을 맡는다면 우리는 가장 좋은 관계를 유지할 수 있을 것입니다. 저는 이러한 사실을 지난 9월 17일자 편지의 4페이지 가운데 부분에서 말씀드린 바 있습니다.
After these remarks you say And now to come of the issues" and the very first "issue" that you mention is one that was never mentioned by Dr. Heron or I, could only have been a supposed issue brought forward by Dr. Allen and one that does not exist at all. Dr. Heron has no issue with Dr. Allen about honors conferred upon him by the King. Nor is he jealous of Dr. Allen's honors. He did once ask Dr. Allen to take him to the Palace but this Dr. Allen declined to do and that was the end of it. About the dinner at the Palace which you speak of on the 2nd. and 3rd. pages of your letter, I myself can assure you that it was never said or intimated by either Dr. Heron or I that any invitation had been suppressed.	이 말씀을 하신 후에 박사님께서는 “이제 본론으로 들어가겠다”고 말씀하셨는데 그 본론으로서 처음 말씀하신 내용은 헤론 의사나 제가 전혀 언급하지도 않았던 것이며 사실과 전혀 다른 것입니다. 헤론 의사는 왕이 알렌 의사에게 부여 해준 특권에 대해 알렌 의사와 이야기를 주고 받은 적이 없습니다. 헤론 의사는 알렌 의사에게 있는 그러한 특권을 시기하지도 않습니다. 단지 헤론 의사는 한번 알렌 의사에게 왕궁에 방문하게 해 주기를 부탁했던 적은 있습니다. 그러나 알렌 의사는 그 부탁을 거절하였고, 그것이 전부였습니다. 박사님 편지의 2페이지와 3페이지에서 말씀하셨던 왕궁의 만찬 건에 대해서 분명히 말씀드리건대, 헤론 의사나 저 두 사람 중에 누구도 “초청이 있었지만 그런 사실이 감추어 졌다”는 말을 하지 않았으며 넌지시 그러한 생각을 내비치지도 않았습니다.
Dr. Russell dined with a few others at my house on the evening of the dinner at the Palace, all that was said about the invitation was said by me and I was dumb-founded on the following morning when Dr. Allen asked whether I had stated that any invitation had been suppressed. 1 told him that I had not said it nor had Dr. Heron and in fact the very first intimation that any one was saying such things came from Dr. Allen himself. If any one heard 'all this talk about suppressing. Dr. Heron's invitation to the Palace' they must have heard it entirely from outsiders who simply saw the facts and drew their own and not Dr. Heron's and my conclusions.	왕궁에서 만찬이 있던 날 저녁 러셀 박사는 제 집에서 몇 분과 함께 식사를 하였는데, 그때 ‘초청’에 관해 말을 했던 사람은 저뿐이었습니다. 그런데 다음날 아침, 알렌 의사가 “초청이 들어 왔었지만 그런 사실이 감추어졌다”는 말을 제가 했냐고 물어 보았습니다. 저는 너무나도 어이가 없었습니다. 저는 알렌 의사에게 저나 헤론 의사는 전혀 그런 말을 한 적이 없다고 했습니다. 사실 누군가가 그런 말을 했다는 생각은 알렌 의사 자신에게서 나왔던 것이었습니다. 혹 왕궁에서 헤론 의사를 초청한 사실이 감추어 졌다는 이야기를 들은 사람이 있다면, 그 사람은 헤론 의사나 제게서 말을 들었던 것이 아니라 우리에 대해 잘 알지 못하면서도 상황을 마음대로 판단해 버린 사람에게서 이야기를 들었던 것이 틀림없습니다.
The next issue touched upon in your letter is at the bottom of page 3 concerning the new hospital and Dr. Allen's explanation which appears to you to be Satisfactory is in reality both lame and colored. Lame in that it deals without one single item in the charge and colored in that it gives a tinge to things that does not belong there.	박사님 편지에서 다루어졌던 다음 내용은 3페이지 하반부의 새로운 병원공간에 관한 것이었습니다. 박사님께 만족스럽게 들렸던 알렌 의사의 설명은 사실 설득력이 없고 겉보기에만 그럴듯하게 윤색된 것일 뿐입니다. 그의 설명은, 관련성 있는 단 한 항목도 다루고 있지 않고 있으므로 설득력이 없고 그곳에 관계되지 않은 것들을 그럴듯하게 보이려 한다는 점에서 윤색된 것입니다.
Dr. Allen in his letter to you simply attempts to explain his selecting a site for a new Hospital without consulting Dr. Heron. He says nothing about all that had gone before or that came after. Before a site could be thought of, some proposal had to be made about a change and the thing was from beginning to end carried out without Dr. Heron having any voice in the matter at all.	알렌 의사는 헤론 의사와 상의 없이 박사님께 보내는 편지에서 새로운 병원을 위한 장소를 택하는 것에 대해 설명하려 합니다. 알렌 의사는, 그 전이나 후에 있던 것들에 대해서는 아무 말도 하지 않습니다. 한 장소에 대해 고려해 보기 전에, 이러한 변화에 대한 어떤 제안들이 먼저 있었어야 합니다. 시작부터 끝까지, 이 사업에 대해 헤론 의사는 단 한 마디도 말할 기회를 갖지 못한 채 일이 진행되었습니다.
Now about Dr. Allen's explanation of this one item. I too was at the dinner and saw and heard all that was done and said. When Dr. Heron was congratulated on the new Hospital he did not manifest ‘good deal of feeling.' He was remarkably cool about the matter simply saying that it was news to him. Dr. Allen in his attempt at a public explanation at that time did state that he had not had time to see Dr. Heron but I have yet to see the man who says that he heard Dr. Allen say that ‘he had decided not to accept the site until he could confer with hits him (Dr. Heron)' Dr. Heron did not here this, neither did I nor in fact any one that I have asked, nor did Dr. Allen carry out this intention. Perhaps he thought that as no one had heard his statement he was not bound to carry it out.	이러한 상황에 대해 알렌 의사가 설명한 것에 대해 말씀드리고 싶습니다. 저도 그 식사 자리에 있었으며 그곳에 있었던 일들을 모두 다 보고 들었습니다. 새 병원 일에 대해 축하인사를 받았을 때, 헤론 의사는 자신의 감정을 많이 드러내지 않았습니다. 헤론 의사는 본인도 몰랐다는 말을 했을 뿐 놀랍게도 냉정함을 잃지 않습니다. 알렌 의사는 공식적으로 설명을 하는 자리에서 나는 헤론 의사를 만날 시간이 없었다고 했습니다. 알렌 의사가 “헤론 의사는 나와 의논을 하고 나서 그 장소를 택하기로 결정했다”고 말하는 것을 들었다는 사람을 만나 보아야 하겠습니다. 헤론 의사나 저, 또 제가 물어 본 다른 사람들도 이런 말을 듣지 못했었고, 알렌 의사는 이러한 의중을 우리에게 보이지 않았습니다. 아마도 그는 아무도 내 말을 들은 사람이 없으면, 나중에 내가 굳이 그대로 하지 않아도 된다고 생각했는지 모릅니다.
You speak also of the inducements that Dr. Allen has had to leave the Mission. They may seem big to you but out here they do not seem large to us. The biggest offer that he ever had (to my knowledge) and one which he came near accepting turned out a mere bauble in a few months and would have stranded Dr. Allen. In his statement to the ? at its last meeting in which he proposes to resign and a copy of which has been sent to you he says that he does this while knowing that he could make his $3000.00 a year here if he stayed.	또한 박사님께서는 알렌 의사가 선교부를 떠나도록 유인하는 것들에 관해 말씀하셨습니다. 이것들이 박사님께는 큰 문제로 보일지 모르겠으나 이곳에 있는 우리에게는 그다지 중요한 것으로 보이지 않습니다. 그가 받았던 제안 중에서 조건이 제일 좋았으며 (제가 알기로는) 거의 받아들일 뻔했던 것은 몇 달 지나지 않아 전혀 실속 없는 것이라는 사실이 밝혀졌습니다. 알렌 의사가 그 제안을 받아들였다면 큰 낭패를 보게 되었을 것입니다. ____의 최근 모임에서 연설 중에 그는 자신의 사퇴를 제의하였는데 그 연설문의 사본이 박사님께 보내졌었습니다. 그 연설 중에 “내가 머물러 있어서, 해마다 3,000달러를 벌 수 있는 것을 아는 한 이렇게 하겠다”고 말했습니다.

And then he has his house rent medicine and instruments furnished, office furniture provided, office fuel and all stationary used in Medical work which is no small item and all of these would fall upon him were he not a missionary. Your question on the 6th. page of your letter as to how it will help matters for us to connect ourselves with another mission has already been answered or referred to above in my letter of Sept. 17th page 4. The leading causes for our action of that date were not ‘miss apprehensions' but facts and such as can clearly be proved.	알렌 의사는 의약품과 도구들이 갖추어진 집과 가구가 있는 사무실을 세놓았습니다. 그리고 그가 선교사가 아니었다면, 결코 사소한 품목이라 할 수 없는 사무실 연료 및 의료 사업에서 고정적으로 사용되는 것들을 비롯한 이 모든 것들을 다 자신이 부담해야 했을 것입니다. 박사님 편지의 6페이지에서 그렇게 하는 것이 “어떻게 우리가 다른 선교부와 연결되는 것을 도울 수 있는지” 물어 보셨던 것은 이미 답해 졌다고 말씀드릴 수 있습니다. 또한 지난 9월 17일자 편지의 4페이지에 언급되어 있으니 그 내용을 참조하셔도 좋겠습니다. 그 날 우리가 그러한 결정을 내렸던 주된 이유는 ‘오해’가 아니라 ‘명백하게 입증될 수 있는 사실’이었습니다.
Now I would add that we have received letters from various sources asking us to try and find some means for a settlement of the difficulties and I expect to present at the next meeting of the mission here a plan of agreement a copy of which I shall and enclose with this. Dr. Allen's communication came suddenly before the meeting and was tabled at once. The plan of agreement will be only carried out conditionally until we hear that our reasons for resigning and not those of others are taken as our true and real reasons by the Board and the Secretaries. I for myself must insist upon this and cannot for a moment consider the withdrawing of my resignation till this is done.	저는 지금 여러 곳에서부터 우리에게 이 어려운 문제들을 해결할 수 있는 방법을 찾아 달라고 부탁하는 내용의 편지를 받았다는 사실을 덧붙여 말씀드리고 싶습니다. 그리고 저는 이곳 선교부의 다음 회의에서 일치계획안을 발표하고자 합니다. 그 사본을 여기 동봉해 보래드리려 합니다. 알렌 의사의 전갈이 회의 전에 갑자기 도착했으며, 곧 바로 제출되었습니다. 일치계획안은, 다른 사람들이 한 말이 아니라 우리가 말한 사퇴 사유가 본부와 서기부에 의해 진실하고 실제적인 것으로 받아들여질 때까지 조건적으로 시행될 것입니다. 저로서는 이러한 주장을 하지 않을 수 없으며 이렇게 될 때까지 제 사퇴의사를 철회할 생각은 조금도 없습니다.
I think that the things asked in the plan of agreement are perfectly just and I do not think that any exception can be taken to then. It still leaves with Dr. Allen the full power of control in all the purely medical work as Miss Ellers votes with him but it does one thing that up to this time has not been done, gives Dr. Heron a voice in matters and lets him know some of the plans that are on foot.	일치계획안에서 요구된 것들은 더할 나위 없이 정당하다고 생각합니다. 그 내용에 대한 어떠한 예외가 있을 것이라 생각하지 않습니다. 이 계획안은 여전히 알렌 의사에게 의료 사업에 대해서만큼은 전권을 인정해 주고 있습니다. 엘러스인물양이 그에게 찬성하는 의사를 밝혔기 때문입니다. 그러나 이 계획안을 통해 지금까지는 없었던 일을 하나 하려 합니다. 헤론 의사에게 여러 사안에 대한 발언권을 부여하며, 진행중인 계획들에 대해 미리 알 수 있도록 하는 것입니다.
